Before Traveling
No Visas are required when visiting South Africa if you are a legal holder of an American or European Union Passport.
Hunters bringing firearms into South Africa for hunting purposes will be issued an import permit on arrival at Johannesburg airport. All hunters must be in possession of the necessary documentation.
Medical insurance is key for any hunter and outdoorsman. Before leaving, contact your medical insurance provider to make sure they are aware of your travels and if you are covered internationally. We recommend Global Rescue as a partner when it comes to medical evacuation and should be considered for anyone traveling abroad for hunting purposes.
Your health and safety are our number one priority. Smit Safaris will always make sure you and your loved ones are well looked after and taken care of. However, there a few things you have to take the necessary measure to insure your own well-being. If you have any sort of medical issue, please see your doctor before embarking on your safari. If you use any prescription medication, be sure to have the correct number of doses for your planned stay. Medications should be clearly labeled with your name on them before traveling. This is only for customs and security checks.
Upon Arrival
Point of Entry will be OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. Depending on the location of safari, a connection flight might be needed.
If the hunting location is close, a team member of Smit Safaris will pick you up from Johannesburg.
1.Arrive at Airport
Go through passport control and then to the Import/Export Office, the appropriate area is marked "Firearms and Security Items".
2.Identify your rifle case and sign for it
3.Collect your normal luggage at the conveyer belt section.
4.Proceed on the GREEN line through customs.
5.If you arrive in Terminal A1 or A2, please exit the arrivals hall and turn to the right and look out for the SAP office where you will be met.
6.Your firearm(s) and ammo will be checked against your pre-issued temporary import permit after which you will be free to leave.
** The procedure with the firearms varies from airline to airline. there may be a slight delay before your firearms arrive at the SA Police office, please allow at least 3 hours before departure of your connecting flight.
COVID-19 and Other Restrictions
COVID-19 vaccinations and negative COVID-19 tests are no longer required for international travel. However, please be cautious before traveling, so your hunt will not be disturbed.
All Smit Safaris hunting areas within South Africa is Malaria free. Any type of vaccination or medication for Malaria is not needed before departure.
Please ensure your Tetanus shot is up to date in case of accidents around knives and other hunting equipment.
